The vision of the fund is to move resources to frontline communities who are implementing climate solutions that are inclusive, regenerative, replicable, and scalable.

This fund was designed and is directed by a 13-member Grassroots Governance Body comprised of grassroots climate justice leaders from across the country. The Governance Body also reviewed and made final decisions on the fund awards.

The fund is designed to provide grants to frontline organizations working to address climate issues in the communities that need it most.

In order to be eligible for funding, applicant organizations must:

  • Have majority Black, Indigenous, or People of Color leadership among staff and board

  • Be grassroots based and serving Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities as priority

  • Be a 501c3 non-profit OR can be fiscally sponsored by a 501c3 non-profit

  • Demonstrate community work and partnerships through their history of work

  • Have an annual budget of no more than $1.5 million

The F4FP is focused on getting funding to frontline organizations that often don’t receive the support they need. We focus on supporting the following types of organizations to apply: those without 501c3 (using a fiscal sponsor), small organizations with 5 employees and below, and those with budgets of $500K and below.

The F4FP grant awards were made as unrestricted, general operating support grants through F4FP partner The Solutions Project. Applications were accepted from eligible organizations according to the following tiers:

Tier 1: Organizational budget of $0-500K per year was eligible to apply for grants of up to 50% of their annual budget (grant awards up to $250K).

Tier 2: Organizational budget of $501k-999K per year was eligible to apply for grants of up to 25% of their annual budget (grant awards between $125k-250K).

Tier 3: Organizational budget of $1m-1.5m per year was eligible to apply for grants of up to $100K.

For organizations using a fiscal sponsor to apply, the budget guidelines applied to the applicant organization, not the fiscal sponsor. For applications that involved more than one organization, applicants were able to combine individual budgets in order to apply within a tier that reflected combined annual budgets.
